The 2017 RIDE Shop Trip

RIDE Shop Trip

By Brandon Pendergast | Assistant Sales Manager, RIDE Snowboards

This journey starts with a good crew and ends with killer views and LOTS of fresh POW!!! In February 2017, RIDE Snowboards took ten lucky shop riders to Monarch Mountain CAT Operation in beautiful Colorado for a private shred session. And it was a RIDE shop trip to remember.

The Meetup

The crew arrived into Denver over two days, from all across the United States. From New Jersey to Arizona, the gang was ready to get down to business. So upon arrival, we piled them  into a van and shipped them up into the mountains.

RIDE Shop Trip: Day One

For the first day of riding on Wednesday, we were joined by Kody Reeves from Clark’s Snow Sports (California), Kenny Good from Tahoe Sports Hub (California), Alex Johnson from Aspen Ski and Board (Ohio), Jared Williams from Colorado Ski and Golf (Colorado), Ellen Kaufman from Boulder Ski Deals (Colorado) and Nick Schuvieller from The House (Minnesota).

The crew on the first day. Stoked for steep and deep!

And what perfect day we had! We lucked out and got out of the CAT onto a foot of new snow. And the light wind delivered continuous refills all day. Heading out at the crack of dawn, everyone got fresh tracks and there were lots of high-fives. In fact, everyone was having so much fun that we rode hard until after 3pm.

RIDE Shop Trip: Day Two

On the second day, the skies cleared and the second group of arrivals started the day with some resort laps at Salida.

The Thursday crew included Andrew Pettis from Erik’s Bike Shop (Minnesota), Mark Roberto from The Ski Barn (New Jersey), Carl Rideout from SKI PRO (Arizona), Trevor Toth from Summit Sports (Wisconsin) and the legendary Bernie Ba from PowderTools (Colorado).

Day 2 Crew at the top of No Name Bowl.

Our three local guides took us out to No Name Bowl for BIGGG POW turns and some super DOG tree laps–which was a real treat at 11,000 feet! The whole crew showed up and represented, slashing carves all day. This day defined true backcountry snowboarding: big bowls and deep tree POW.

Until Next Season

RIDE couldn’t do what we do without the support of our local shops, and this was just a small way of saying thank you to them for all their hard work this season. Also, a huge thanks to the regional sales reps who came out and Monarch Mountain CAT Operations for the expertise some of the best lines of the season! Until next year.

Shop Spotlight: Milo Snow and Skate

The team at Milo Auburn

We are in the business of selling tools for having fun. We aren’t selling image or attitude. We are in the FUN business. ~ Jason “Jay” Watson | Co-Owner, Milo Snow & Skate

The History of Milo

George Johnston is no stranger to the snowboard scene; his impressive list of contributions include operating Milosport in Utah for more than twelve years, establishing Milo’s shop team, and building relationships with some of the biggest and most influential names in the industry (seriously, check out the Milo Legacy Team). But with a growing family, Johnston left Salt Lake City in 2000 to head back to his home in California.

Settling in the Bay Area, Milosport Lafayette opened its doors in August 2000, bringing much-needed life to the local snowboarding community. Over the next fifteen years, Johnston and his team provided high-quality gear and service to an entire generation of rippers.

In 2015, Johnston and his longtime shop manager, Jason Watson, partnered up and decided to move closer to the mountains and Milo Snow & Skate was born. Now located in Auburn—less than 100 miles from Tahoe—Milo continues to deliver on gear and service and if you’re looking for a crazy colorway or niche brand, the chances are good that these guys have it.

Milo Auburn has great selection and great service.

The Milo Auburn Team

The shop team is made up of passionate people who live and breath the industry they represent. “Everyone in our Milo Family is key,” says Co-Owner Jason Watson. “Some of us might wear more hats than others, but we are all cogs that help this thing work.”

Add to the mix an amazing local skate team that is heavily involved in the community (check out their fundraising efforts for a new skate park in Colfax) and a snow team that produces so much content every season that it’s literally mind-blowing and it’s obvious that Milo works with the best people in the business.

“We are truly blessed to have so many great team members and athletes that want to be part of the Milo Family,” Watson adds.

The RIDE Connection

It started with a beer. Well, two beers.

“When Jim Linnberg—now the RIDE Global Brand Director—was our Sales Rep years ago, I made him have a two-beer minimum anytime he came into the store. This eliminated the possibility of a quick ‘pop-in’ and he quickly learned to come in towards the end of the day,” says Watson with a laugh. “In fact, I’m pretty sure he slept in his car in our parking lot once or twice.”

And it’s those relationships that have contributed to the success of Milo: “Jim Linnberg and Kendra Langston are really more like family to us rather than colleagues,” Watson adds. “And Topher [Laws] in the Pacific Northwest is awesome, too.”

RIDE + Milo Auburn - Get to ze choppa!

“But the bottom line is that RIDE has done a fantastic job at not only making very relevant products, but also hiring amazing people to sell them to us and support us in selling them to our customers.”

Thoughts on the Tahoe Snowboard Scene

Great mountains and great people is how the crew at Milo Auburn describes Tahoe. Plus, two seasons of incredible snowfall, a wide array of terrain, and easy backcountry access proves why the area is a snowboard mecca.

The Milo Auburn crew is always ready to answer questions and help out.

“We are excited that we get to be a part of this scene and wouldn’t pick anywhere else we would rather be,” says Watson.

A Wild RIDE to the Baker Banked

A WILD RIDE to Baker Banked

The RIDE team left cell service and headed into the North Cascades to participate in the oldest running snowboard event in America: the Legendary Banked Slalom.

It Really Is Legendary

Also known as the greatest one-and-a-half-minute leg work out in the world, LBS takes place in Mt. Baker’s historic natural halfpipe and is arguably the most prestigious snowboard race in the world. The weekend-long event attracts snowboardings top dogs–which is the reason we threw Jake Blauvelt, Hana Beaman and Jake Welch into the mix to see just how fast they could go.

Mt. Baker is Unforgiving

The Cascades are unpredictable and weather was not on the sides of the racers as near whiteout conditions ripped through the course during both qualifying days. High winds toppled old-growth trees, blocking roads and knocking out power for much of the area. Basically, Mother Nature was not having it.

However, race times came in and the boys made Sunday finals. When the storm broke, blue skies descended on the course and it was fast as heck. Winning gold isn’t really our style, so no storybook ending here but as you can tell by the photos, Welch, Hana and Blauvelt looked damn good doing it.

The Legendary Banked Slalom

Held annually since 1985, LBS is regarded as the predecessor to the boardercross event and has been won by some of the biggest names in the history of snowboarding. The winner receives a Duct Tape trophy and an embroidered Carhartt jacket.

We’ll be partying out there again next year so sign up to receive event updates and we’ll see you there.
